The world’s biggest short play festival is back in Sydney.

Short+Sweet 2025 is a celebration of play writing, plus the creation of original theatre.

Festival starts from – Thursday 20th February 2025 to Sunday 18th May 2025

In 2025 Short+Sweet features over 100 plays, in the span of just twelve weeks, all are competing for a spot in the Gala Finals, where we award the best of the best.

Each evening from 7pm, audiences will experience an eclectic mix of brand new Australian works, and THIS WEEK Short+Sweet Sydney Week Five – Thursday to Sunday at 7pm, audiences will enjoy a line-up of new plays – all timed at under ten minutes and featuring young writers, directors and performers tackling tropes.

Full range of brand new works brought to the forefront, sharp comedies, existential dramas, surreal horror, poetry, musical, political and inspirational narratives, drive the eight week season.

(1) ALICE’S ADVENTURES ON HEADLAND
Written and directed by Dharma Hadley

Alice is adventuring onto the headland at Bondi for
Sculpture by the Sea. What will the sculptures have
to say to her?

(2) THE STUNTMAN
Written and directed by Asim Das

The tragic life of a stuntman whose job is to take
life-threatening risks in performing for actors who
receive all the glory instead.

(3) SEEN
Written by Neil Radtke
Directed by Debbie Kearns
Tom and Angela fight for survival in the final of a
series of torture rooms.

(4) A BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO

Directed by Emily Garrett
An elderly woman reflects on her past life and her
current situation in a nursing home.

(5) THE EX
Written by Diones Camargo
Directed by Cris Bocchi
ITC = CBA – Connection Brazil Australia
A motivational coach and relationship columnist at a
renowned feminine magazine meets with the
audience for a well-humoured lecture…

(6) WOODSTOCK THE MUSICAL
Written and directed by Lisa Kelaher

…it’s about the power of a generation to change things
and the power to change from within.

(7) SHADES OF LOSS

Directed by Lachlan McWilliam
Shades of Loss reminisces on the impact and
changes that occur in Edith, diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s Dementia.

(8) DOPPELGÄNGER
Written by Barry Wood
Directed by Chantal Harrison
Two strangers, Maddie and Steph look nothing like
each other – but why are both convinced otherwise?

(9) THE FOURTH WALL
Written and directed by Steve Larkman
ITC = Synthetic Stories
If you come to the theatre to simply watch, beware,
as the fourth wall shatters. Bon appetit!

(10) THE PIGEON
Written by Karen Siff Exkorn
Directed by Annie Geissler
A woman in search of saving her marriage finds
herself inspired by a pigeon on the sidewalk of
New York City.

(11) SPICEY
Written by Fran Bowick
Directed by Gina Cohen
ITC = Team Spicey Theatre Company
Being the hottest ticket in the cupboard isn’t
always a good thing.
STARRING – Chris Argirousis, Grace Ho, Edric Hong and
Edward Frame

EXPECT – Some plays may contain “crude indecent” adult themes, and strong highly offensive profanities, offensive/coarse language, offensive foul material/themes, moderate alcohol usage, and issues relating to trauma. Recommended only for persons over the age of 18.

The festival’s dynamic season continues with dedicated programs showcasing emerging talent during Youth Week (( 6-9 March 2025 )) and innovative Shakespeare interpretations in ‘Bite-sized Bard’ (( 4-7 April 2025 )), curated by Come You Spirit’s Jo Bloom.

May brings a spectacular Cabaret Week (( 5-8 May 2025 )), featuring an array of singers, dancers, and multidisciplinary artists.

The season culminates in the highly anticipated Semi-Finals and Gala Finals (( 16+17 May 2025 )), where the festival’s most outstanding performances compete for top honours.
