SHORT AND SWEET SYDNEY THEATRE FESTIVAL – 2024 WEEK FIVE @ TURNER HALL THEATRE

S+S SYDNEY 2024 Heat #5

The world’s biggest short play festival is back in Sydney.

SHORT AND SWEET Sydney 2024 aims to focus on new and unique ideas with an added emphasis on spotlighting the individual writers behind their works and their process.

Short+Sweet 2024 is a celebration of play writing, plus the creation of original theatre.

Over 70 plays feature in the span of just eight weeks, all are competing for a spot in the Gala Finals, where we award the best of the best.

Range of brand new works brought to the forefront, sharp comedies, existential dramas, surreal horror, poetry, musical, political and inspirational narratives drive the eight week season.

Prizes being awarded weekly (at each Sunday show), dedicated programs spotlighting some of the brightest creatives in the community, and a new award category for works that have a truly unique concept.

2 IS DEVON MANUFACTURED
Written by Ray Coyne (Sydney NSW)
Directed by Jasmine Karam (Sydney NSW)
STARRING – Bernard Woodcock (Devon) and Nas Khan (Jan)
Awful comedy, the theatre producer has a director that is completely blind to all his many mistakes/flaws. Plot reminds me of SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER – from the movie THE PRODUCERS.

3 A CRIMINAL MIND
Written by Paula Armstrong
Directed by Tyler Smith
Produced by Xavier Lynch
STARRING – Amy Tustian (Carter), Damien Noyce (Norman), Kira McLennan (The Woman) and Logan Faull (The Man)
Money extortion with drama galore, in this very very entertaining, hostage torture comedy.

4 THE MEDIUM
Written by Jonathan Soloman (Sydney)
Directed by Robin Queree (Penrith, NSW)
STARRING – Annete van Roden (Cassandra), Hop Dao (Josephine) and Robin Queree (Trent)
Sometimes comedy is extra-large, however this comedy is just MEDIUM. Her dead uncle is contacted, to locate his buried fortune.

INTERVAL of 15 MINUTES

5 DISCONNECTED
From SCRIPT IN HAND SYDNEY
Written by Ruth Fingret
Directed by Garreth Cruikshank
ITC = Seat of the Pants Productions
STARRING – Ursula Dauenhauer (Julianne) and Rhiannon Jean (Emma)
This superb dialogue intensive drama is beautifully constructed. Mother and daughter attempt to reconnect, and discuss their many issues, including Dad is dead. Perfectly cast, and deliciously directed with panache by Garreth Cruikshank.

6 MAIN CHARACTER ENERGY
From SHORT+SWEET ILLAWARRA 2023 – Festival Director Selection
Written and directed by Freia Kirkaldy (Sydney NSW)
Assistant Director = Rima Chakrabarty
STARRING – Franca Lafosse (Emma)
Excellent monologue, performed in one voice. This young woman is a social media cheat, delivering both Comedy and Drama, a role-model multitasker influencer, her work life and times, over many years.

7 BREAK A LEG
Written by Nita Wolf (Marrackville NSW)
Directed by Stephen Carnell (Elizabeth Bay)
ITC = Actors Anonymous Inc
STARRING – Andrea Tan (Scarlet Tease), Barret Griffin (Adrian) and Logan Faull (Luke).
Comedy and Drama, with angry relationship revenge most foul. With broken leg and on crutches, delivers excellent burlesque Tassle-Twirling. Audience comedy favourite, at the opening night performance.

EXPECT – Some plays may contain “crude indecent” adult themes, and strong highly offensive profanities, offensive/coarse language, offensive foul material/themes, moderate alcohol usage, and issues relating to trauma. Recommended only for persons over the age of 18.
