This show took place as part of the many Sydney Festival events that are taking place at Sydney Theatre Company’s Wharf 1 Theatre. During the Festival period the front section of the seating has been laid out with table seating and a bar area for drink and nibbles down one side.
The show was introduced by the young director, I didn’t catch her name, who let us know that the show had been fast tracked with the troupe only having had six months to get the show up in time for the Festival.
RACHAEL BECK : IN HER OWN WORDS is the brainchild of the highly talented performer Rachael Beck (Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast) and James Millar (Matilda The Musical).
The nature of the show is that Beck and her team interviewed some of Australia’s highest achieving women to get some insights in to their life journey and the wisdoms they have gleamed. Beck these with us, together with photos that have been provided which flash across the multimedia screen behind her. Beck sang classic Australian songs together with each ‘story’. My highlight was Beck’s beautifully rendered version of the great Hunters and Collectors song Throw Your Arms Around Me. This show always gets me! Beck was accompanied by a superb pianist.
The story behind Louise Sauvage ‘s OAM path to success was particularly poignant, especially as Savage was in the audience.
RACHAEL BECK : IN HER OWN WORDS is a well realised show in a very popular genre of theatre that aims to inspire us to do more with our own lives.
The show is playing Wharf !, Sydney Theatre Company until the 18th January 2025.
