This spring, for the first time ever, Barangaroo Reserve will become home to Stargazer Cinema, a free outdoor cinema experience. The program, curated by Winda Film Festival, celebrates the power of First Nations storytelling, while supporting opportunities for Indigenous voices to empower, inspire and entertain.
Running over eight weeks, Stargazer Cinema will showcase the works of emerging First Nations filmmakers from Australia and around the world.
With Sydney Harbour as the backdrop and the stars overhead, audiences will gather at Barangaroo Reserve for a cinematic experience like no other. The setting is especially fitting as in the local Dhurung language the name Yellamundie Ngurang means “Storyteller Place.”
As part of the program, audiences can look forward to acclaimed Australian films including The Drover’s Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson (a powerful reimagining of survival and resilience in the Snowy Mountains); Sweet As (the first ever Western Australian feature film to be written and directed by an Indigenous Australian woman); and The Moogai (the highly anticipated psychological horror film by award-winning director Jon Bell). These films will screen alongside international features including BATI, Sweet Summer Pow Wow and Koka.
Together, the line-up spans moving dramas, uplifting adventures and bold contemporary tales from First Nations storytellers. Adding to the experience, all directors will be in attendance to introduce their films including Leah Purcell, Andrew Ponton, Darrell Dennis and Kath Akyhata-Brown.
For visitors looking for refreshments while enjoying the film, food and drinks will be available to purchase on site. Guests are also welcome to BYO or better yet, grab a takeaway dinner from one of Barangaroo’s incredible eateries and make it a true dinner-and-a-movie experience.
