John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John lit up the cinema screen in GREASE, the unforgettable movie cult classic, released in 1978.
The Manly Musical Society is currently presenting the original musical which originally premiered in Chicago in 1971. The Society fills the stage with an energetic ensemble cast showcasing magnificent voices, each with unbounded energy, which bring back the rock ‘n’ roll 1950s in true greased-lightning style.
For those few who don’t know how the story goes…Danny and Sandy during their summer holiday vacation enjoy a whirlwind passionate love affair. They expected to never to see each other again, and unexpectedly start their final school year in the same high school, at Rydell High.
Their high school is full of gang-like cliques, and Sandy joins the gum-chewing Pink Ladies. Danny is already a member of the hip-thrusting greasers called T-Birds. However cool cat Danny, and goody-goody, uptight, naïve, nerdy virgin catholic Sandy, end up seeking to find a path to monogamous fulfilled romance in their high school environment.
Carolyn Reid as Sandy and Jay Cullen as Danny give outstanding performances in the leads.
Veracity and vigour arrive in the multi-dimensional performances provided by Sam Ducker as Teen Angel, Jake Buratti as the huge, hunky Kenickie, and Laura Dawson as the forever feisty Rizzo.
This highly recommended GREASE delivers a very entertaining and excessively enjoyable night out. You will once again hear some of the best songs in musical theatre history including “Greased Lightnin” “Beauty School Dropout” “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Summer Nights”.
GREASE is playing the Star Of The Sea Theatre, Manly situated in the Stella Maris College, corner of Collingwood Street and Iluka Avenue.
