Lily Hensby – I, Julia
![]()
If Lily Hensby ever says to you that she’d “rather be shot in the fuckin’ face” than whatever you are suggesting she is only quoting her idol Julia Louis-Dreyfus from her Veep role as Selina Meyer. Lily is being funny and is not advocating extreme violence. The character Selina Meyer uttered many memorable and extreme quotes over the seven series of Veep and Lily Hensby starts her show with a selection of them.
Lily Hensby is a massive admirer of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She sees Julia as a consummate performer and as a role model. She cites Veep, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in the Marvel films and, of course, Elaine from Seinfeld as inspirational characters and evidence of Julia Louis-Dreyfus being the ultimate performer.
Lily Hensby is starting to believe that she may be Julia Louis-Dreyfus and in order to prove this theory wrong, Lily is going to do the most perfect impression of Julia Louis-Dreyfus that anyone has ever seen in order to summon Julia to the festival and finally become best mates with her comedy hero. Quotes from Seinfeld and Veep continue and are mixed with a hilarious Elaine dance sequence and some enthusiastic audience participation.
There are lots of laughs in this show and Lily keeps the audience amused but unfortunately it appears that Julia is not about to wander in from the busy, vibrant and diverse Enmore Road and into the cosy and intimate Enmore Loft. This realisation prompts Lily to examine some existential questions about the nature of comedy and issues about performance. Lily draws on her Honours Degree and her thesis about comedy to explore some fundamental and very interesting ideas.
Lily Hensby – I, Julia is being performed as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival 26 until Sunday 3rd May and is recommended, especially for fans Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
