HEATHERS THE MUSICAL AT THE ROSLYN PACKER THEATRE

Welcome to Westerberg High, where the desperate need to belong is part of the curriculum. The Australian 2026 production of HEATHERS THE MUSICALbrings the cult 1989 movie “Heather” starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater from the screen to the stage, with a mix of known and up-and-coming cast proving that the next generation of musical theatre talent is ready for their big moment.

“Well, fuck me gently with a chainsaw. Do I look like Mother Teresa?” – Heather

The Heathers reign the school keeping order in the ‘all American’ high eco system. Each Heather has her moment front and centre showcasing their fantastic musical theatre vocals along with their preppy acts. Heather Chandler (Calista Nelmes) puts the fear in everyone with her bitchy confidence; Heather Duke (Amélia Rojas) is forever in Heather’s shadows waiting for her time to rule the school and Heather McNamara (Abigail Sharp) submissively click clacks behind Heather agreeing with Heather & Heather.

“Whats your damage, Heather!” – Veronica Sawyer

Leaving just enough room on stage for the newest “Heather”, Veronica Sawyer, that is Emma Caporaso! Debuting in her first headline musical role and what a jackpot! Navigating her way through high school with her forgery skills & unexpected quirky humour, Veronica makes friends with all the wrong people. Soon learning that breaking down the toxic hierarchy in her school might cause more chaos or death than she intended.

J.D (Conor Beaumont) schmoozes his way into Veronicas life with a 7-Eleven slurpee brain freeze, then taking her innocence and enlightening her to the harsh reality of his past. Igniting on stage Beaumont is familiar with this style of twisted dark satire previously debuting in the production American Psycho.

“So do we just like whip it out or what” – Kurt & Ram

Obnoxious jocks Ram Sweeney (David Cuny) & Kurt Kelly (Nick Van Lits) really ramp up the bullying as they share one brain between two mouths. Their larrikin like behaviour has the audience laughing at them for their hilarious ignorance.

Poor dumptruck Martha Dunnstock (Mel O’Brien) cops the most not being popular or petty. It takes a lot to withstand all this but award winning O’Brien knows how to hold space and character for everything that is thrown at her with a multi disciplinary arts background.

Ms Fleming  (Zoe Gertz) speaks out, even engaging the audience, as part of her reprise from a previous marriage and Ram’s Dad (Ellis Dolan) stands up and out in his support for the homosexual community to support his “dead gay son”!

The supporting high school cast members are amazing as they twist the mood and atmosphere to feel like a real life scene with their reactions and characterised stage presence performing to the music & lyrics by Kevin Murphy & Laurence O’Keefe: Kurts Dad/Veronicas Dad/Prinicpal Gowan (Brodie Masini), Beleagured Geek (Mackenzie Htay), Hipster Dork (Jack reason), Preppy Stud (Samuel Henderson), Young Republicanette (Thalia Osegueda Santos), Stoner Chick (Jocelyn Scott), New Wave Party Girl (Hannah Chesser), Drama Club Drama Queen (Scarlett Anthony) & Midwestern Surfer Punk (Aimee Jones).

From the infamous croquet scene, where the innocent garden game takes a rude Heathers turn to the ominous cow patch scene where unforgiving boundaries are pushed. It is exactly the kind of darkened drama that made the original film so startling, and seeing it translated into live theatre makes you push back in your seat witnessing the reality of this high school culture.

37 years later, the satirical dark story of surviving high school still has its thread in year 2026. Preppy culture is worshipped on social media with scrunches & sorority living making a come back. Decade draw backs and forward reforms reflective with school shootings increasing, sexual violence recognised and a mental health focus on suicide & the LGBTQ community.

The timing of this musical production touring Australia couldn’t be more relevant to reflect on the decades that created us.

From curtain up to curtain down, the exceptional cast of 19, directed by Andy Fickman and choreographed by Gary Lloyd, bring theatrical wit to every scene making these nostalgic characters their own. Cleverly sharing the lows and highs of iconic moments in a way that is satisfyingly entertaining on stage without losing the wicked nature from Daniel Waters original film directing in 1989.

But, all this to be popular? Yes, in order to be a part of such a fun and iconic musical production I would highly recommend attending or risk being an outcast.

Concluding Opening Night with a standing ovation and positive remarks whispered throughout.  This is one of the most fun nights I have had at a musical theatre production in a while!

HEATHERS : THE MUSICAL is playing the Roslyn Packet theatre, Sydney, from 1st September through to 19th September 2026, as part of their national tour.
