FUCCBOIS: LIVE IN CONCERT at THE OLD FITZ

In “FUCCBOIS,” a satirical take on toxic dating culture, Bridie Connell’s new show expertly fuses the boy-band phenomenon with biting commentary on love, fame, and self-destruction. This high-energy musical comedy, performed by an all-female cast playing a fictitious boy band, feels both hilarious and poignant. Set during the band’s supposed last concert, “FUCCBOIS” explores the dysfunction and limerance among the band members as they fall in and out of love with their adoring fans, each other, and their long-suffering tour manager.

The concept of women playing men, complete with exaggerated masculine posturing, adds a sharp layer of satire. It provokes thought about women’s issues, dating dynamics, and the complex relationships people have with fame. The FUCCBOIS are knowingly past their prime, still clinging to the spotlight even though the world has moved on without them. Their desperation to stay relevant adds a tragic undertone to the otherwise vibrant and comedic spectacle.

The music is key to the show’s success. With book, music, and lyrics written by Connell, the songs are cleverly crafted to poke fun at boy-band clichés, featuring hilarious tunes about being a “good listener,” flaunting rich parents, and the ever-present desire to just be “sexy.” Each number lands with wit and charm, offering laughs but also biting truths about superficiality and self-worth.

Performances by Connell, Gabbi Bolt, Megan Walshe, Clara Harrison, and Orya Golgowsky as the FUCCBOIS are magnetic. Their chemistry is palpable, and their over-the-top boy-band antics—hair flicks, synchronized moves, and exaggerated emotional confessions—are spot-on, making it easy to forget you’re watching women playing men. There’s a delightful irony in seeing them embody these roles, both celebrating and critiquing the tropes of male pop stardom.

Director Jessica Fallico masterfully wrangles the cast’s chaotic energy, keeping the show’s pacing brisk and playful. The choreography, combined with Tim Hope’s electrifying light show, heightens the concert-like atmosphere, making the audience feel as if they’re truly part of the last hurrah of a fading boy band.

“FUCCBOIS” is a riotous, provocative show that uses humour to explore deeper themes of love, fame, and identity. Its playful take on gender roles and the pop culture machine feels fresh and timely, with enough emotional depth to resonate long after the lights go down.
