This brand new version of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is nothing short of a theatrical masterpiece, a sparkling gem that redefines Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy for a modern audience. This production, filmed live from the National Theatre in London, and fully enchanted Australian Cinema audiences from 27th March 2025, and is a dazzling celebration of wit, charm, and theatrical ingenuity.

Ncuti Gatwa, the very magnetic star of DOCTOR WHO and SEX EDUCATION, is an absolute revelation as Algy. His performance is a masterclass in comedic timing, and charisma, effortlessly capturing the mischievous spirit of Wilde’s beloved rogue. Gatwa’s Algy is both rakish and endearing, a perfect foil to Hugh Skinner’s brilliantly nuanced portrayal of Jack. Hugh Skinner is well known, for his scene-stealing roles in the shows, MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN and FLEABAG, and delivers a delightful performance, that is equal parts hilarious and heartfelt, navigating Jack’s dual identities with impeccable precision and pure charm.

The supporting cast is nothing short of extraordinary. Eliza Scanlen, Australia’s own rising star, is radiant as Gwendolen, blending her unbearable irritating British vocalizations, and together with her razor-sharp wit, and always with her irresistible elegance. Her love chemistry is palpable, making all their romantic entanglements, just all the more delightful. Sharon D Clarke, is a three-time Olivier Award winner, and is the ultimate tour de force, as Lady Bracknell. Her commanding presence and impeccable delivery, breathe fresh new life, into one of theatre’s most iconic characters, ensuring every line lands with both humour and gravitas.

Director Max Webster, celebrated for his visionary work on NTlive LIFE OF PI, brings a fresh and dynamic energy to this production. His direction has panache and is both inventive and respectful of Wilde’s original text, striking the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. The staging is bold and imaginative, the pacing is flawless, and the humour is delivered with pinpoint precision. Director Max Webster’s ability to highlight the play’s biting social commentary, while embracing its farcical absurdity is a testament to his skill as a director.

The production’s design is a feast for your eyes, with sumptuous costumes and a set that seamlessly transitions between the opulence of London, and the bucolic charm of the countryside. The theatre cinematography, capturing the live performance, adds an intimate yet cinematic quality, making it a truly unique experience for audiences.

At its heart, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is a story about love, identity, and the absurdities of societal expectations. This production not only honours Wilde’s genius, but elevates it, reminding us why this play remains a timeless classic. The dialogue sparkles, the performances are pitch-perfect, and the energy is utterly infectious.

Whether you are a lifelong admirer of Oscar Wilde’s work, or discovering THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST for the first time, this production is an unmissable event. It is a joyous celebration of love, laughter, and the enduring power of great storytelling. Don’t miss the chance to experience this triumph of modern theatre on the big screen, this is a theatrical event, that will leave you grinning from ear to ear, long after the final bow.

Bravo to the entire cast and creative team of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, for delivering a production that is as earnest as it is extraordinary.
