The lovely, ornate, high ceilinged dining room at the inner city Castlereagh Boutique Hotel was a great venue to revisit the classic comedy series Fawlty Towers.
Things don’t get much more better than enjoying a superb three course meal whilst in the company of Basil, Sybil and Manuel run riot around the room with endless misunderstandings, mishaps and niggling between them. There’s plenty of cast interaction with us, all of it non threatening and great fun. Very slapstick. It was played in great spirit.
There were a few diners who were celebrating their birthdays and each of them received some ribbing. There was a bit of cute byplay a woman who said that it was her 100th birthday when clearly she had just added about thirty years to her age.
Favourite skits from the show were covered including the rat sequence and of-course Basil’s legendary goose step.
The three performances were excellent and right on point; Matthew Robson as the totally stressed out Basil, Monique Lewis Reynolds was the fawningly charming Sybil and Adrian.Espulso was terrific as the hopelessly inept Manuel. We were all just waiting for his next ill conceived move.
This show which was conceived by Australian theatremakers and was first performed in Brisbane in 1997 which means it is now celebrating its 25th year. It has been performed in satellite cities around the world.
This is a truly winning show. Sydney theatregoers still have the opportunity to see the show which is coming back to the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel on Thursday 29th August, Saturday 26 October, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th December 2024.
There will also be performances at the Strathfield Golf Club on the 6th July and Epping Club on the 30th and the 31st August 2024.
