Powerhouse musician Elana Stone shares her third studio album MARRIED TO THE SOUND out today via ABC Music. The release delves in to love, motherhood, climate change, social/political polarisation, friendship, love, loss, and lockdown – all served on a crispy bed of synth pop, hazy guitar, to-die-for vocal harmonies with a side of 70’s drums and in your face, fuzz bass.
The follow-up to 2015’s debut EP KINTSUGI, the album harnesses modern electronica, indie pop and balladry, underpinned by Stone’s signature lyrical vulnerability and ear for melody. Drawing inspiration from the great artists across the last few decades, Elana describes the album as “Billy Joel’s piano meets Kate Bush’s vocals meets Ben Folds Five’s harmonies but with Unknown Mortal Orchestra or Tame Impalal as the house band.”
Today the ARIA-award winning songwriter has revealed the accompanying video for single ‘Shitty Shit’ – a dance-able anthem for the politically enraged written with bandmate and co-producer Luke Moseley. The track was born from a place of pure and unbridled frustration and meditates on the theme of environmental destruction, political and media driven fear-mongering and a growing feeling of societal division and personal isolation.
Elana comments, “The world seems to have become more and more divided – even on issues that directly affect us all – like our climate. The media has a lot to answer for, as do our politicians. Scientists have been telling us for decades now that we cannot continue to live in the way that we have been living. We cannot keep burning fossil fuels and producing plastics that never break down. We cannot keep destroying our forests or endangering our animal populations. Biodiversity is key to our health and to the health of our planet. We are of this earth, it is not a ‘resource’ for us to use and abuse at will.”

The album features a rich collection of previously released singles, including the sparkly ‘People Come And People Go’, electro-pop‘Permanent Limbo’, reflective ‘Bulletproof’‘, the upbeat 70’s bop‘Oregon’, and ode to the environment ‘Cephalopods’.
Finding creative synchronicity with the incredible Butternut Sweetheart (Luke Moseley), Elana enlisted her bandmate to co-produce, along with Josh Pyke, Tony Buchen and Justin Stanley in various co-writing and co-production roles.
Elana reflects “This album has been many years and a million tiny moments in the making. I feel like I have grown in a multitude of infinite ways. I met my partner, I became a mother for the first time, I toured the world and then had a second child, we bought a house and buckled up for a worldwide pandemic, survived and then I re-entered the world as a working mum and artist and musician.
Music has been a constant for me throughout my life. I really am ‘Married to the Sound ’– for better or worse. It’s really scary putting music out there in the world. It’s so personal to me and I actually really want people to listen to it and have a relationship with it. I want it to bring them joy and connect with their deepest sadness. I want it to make them nod, laugh, dance and cry – all at once if possible”
Known for her dynamic stage presence, Elana has supported and performed with artists like Washington, Donny Benet, and John Butler.
As one quarter of the indie folk group, All Our Exes Live in Texas, Elana has toured across the USA with Midnight Oil, and supported The Backstreet Boys (USA), Passenger (UK) and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats.
Coming off the back of a massive national tour for Missy Higgins’ 20th Anniversary for The Sound of White, Elana will be heading across the East Coast this November in support of the brand-new album.
She will also be supporting Missy Higgins at the Opera House Forecourt on December 1 for the ‘Sound of White Anniversary’Encore Shows and hitting the road with Kate Miller Heidke in February/March 2025 on her ‘Telling Tales’ Tour.
