DRAW TWO: THE LATE SHOW AT THE OLD FITZ

Meg Goodfellow’s DRAW TWO is the current late show playing at the Old Fitz.

The show is about an unnamed woman who has come back to Sydney to help the family. Her twin sister Mia has died and after discussions with her mother and her girlfriend Ella she has agreed to take custody of her boy. The play starts with her standing in line at a  supermarket checkout when she runs in to Kieren who was a close friend, perhaps more, of Mia’s. Kieran mistakes her for Mia and for some reason she plays along with it and pretends she is Mia. As the old saying goes, ‘what a tangled web we weave, when we first practice to deceive’, he decision leads her on a fraught, complicated, challenging and often humorous journey.

This was a very well, intricately plotted play by Goodfellow confidently directed by Lauren Bennett. The set, I am assuming, was shared with the main play running at the Old Fitz, was of a living room but wasn’t really significant as the play switched locations quite rapidly, relying on the audience’s imagination. There was a good use of multimedia with fun, quirky mini videos by Laura Hayley. El Zielinski’s lighting design was excellent, and Zae Sarie’s edgy.

Georgina McGineness’ solo performance was radiant, sassy and funny. She confidently switched between all the different characters at super quick speed. A very fine performance, and she deserved the very warm applause at the play’s end.

Definitely a four stars show.
