Belgian pianist and composer Daniel Verstappen returns to the Sydney Opera House on May 2 (7pm) for a one-night performance that brings together classical piano, film music and original composition.
Verstappen has developed a distinctive voice that draws on the emotional language of cinema as much as the classical tradition. His programs move between his own works and reimagined music by composers such as Hans Zimmer (Interstellar), Ennio Morricone (Cinema Paradiso) and Nino Rota (The Godfather), offering audiences a different way into the piano recital.
Joining him is Australian violinist Yena Choi, whose work across orchestral, chamber and contemporary performance adds another dimension to the program.
Ahead of the concert, Verstappen has released a new single, a reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (Swan Theme). While centred on piano, the recording expands into a more cinematic sound world, incorporating layered strings and percussive elements that build in scale and intensity. The track features a string ensemble drawn from the Aotea Youth Symphony, lending it a richness that bridges solo performance and orchestral colour.
Verstappen has performed internationally at venues including Carnegie Hall and previously at the Sydney Opera House, where his 2024 appearance drew a strong audience response. His return continues that connection, with a program that sits between classical repertoire and the influence of film music on contemporary listening.
Daniel Verstappen performs at the Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House on May 2 at 7pm.Tickets are now available via the Sydney Opera House website.
