The best of TheatreSports™ champion improvisors mixing it up with some of the bravest celebrities. Be they known in sports, media or radio, musicians or actors on film or TV, writers and podcasters; one thing is certain we are all here for one thing. The support of the amazing charity CANTEEN. When cancer crashes into a young person’s life, it turns their world upside down. These are their formative years – a time that should be about friendships, schooling, and exploring independence – yet instead many are faced with fear, grief and isolation. Canteen makes sure no young person faces cancer alone. They stand beside 12-25 year olds through their toughest times, providing free and tailored support to help them cope, stay connected, and rebuild their lives. Visiting to report as Ambassadors were Leavea Vaifale and Tynielle Gomez.

CELEBRITY THEATRESPORTS™
This year’s event was branded as a challenge in the guise of the Roman Empire with guest MC host Garry Eck the Caesar of the night. Along with out-of-town Celebrities, wishing a game challenge as pre recorded voice over. (Rove McManus, Kitty Flanagan, Susie Youssef, The Umbilical Brothers, Jonesy and Amanda and Andrew Denton.)

Bravo Julie Dunsmore, the director, who initiated this cup challenge many years ago. Canteen is 40 years old and Theatresports Australia is 40 years young. Timekeeper Jane Simmons with Host Garry wrangled the audience, some of whom were first timers and the players. Live musician Benny Davis also improvised along with the talent never missing a beat.

Celebrity went all the way to the top with the Judges including legend godmother of Theatresports in Australia Lyn Pierse, Liz Hovey (oncologist) and this year joined by Gretel Killeen.

Classic games were the set up round one and we loved the scene where the players had to embody animal characters, genre rollercoaster, expert double figures setting Gorillas to synchronise swimming, and a song about AI love and emotional replay all making an appearance. The Act 2 games lifted us even further with the collaboration on high rotation given it is a championship in name only. So with Shakespeare off grid, a Noir ex gatecrashing a wedding and a family canceling xmas change game. There was an opera about an undertaker, Shakespeare on an island and the finale saw the top two teams play with brilliance a Rock Opera titled Deportation and then a scene where the audience supplied the sound effects. I cannot recall when I have laugh out loud so often. Everyone in the audience were engaged in the impro mayhem.

This is an annual event so come along next time. I can tease you with the team names and their players – all stars tonight.
