Where can you hear about the connection between Joan of Arc and Christina Aguilera? Where can you hear about the connection between the hot doctor and a pickaxe murder? Where can you hear about the connection between anxiety and aioli? The venue where you will find the answer to these questions is in The Workshop at The Factory Theatre in Marrickville, courtesy of Brodi Snook and her excellent show, Villain Encore. It is part of the 2024 Sydney Comedy Festival and is a thoughtful and amusing show.

Brodi Snook stands up on stage and cleverly weaves the threads of her life together with a series of funny, absurd and preposterous tales. The way she connects the various components is an impressive feature of her writing. That she gathers a steady stream of laughs from the audience with her insightful connections is a masterful skill.

Brodi tells some good stories about pathetic males that have heckled her or treated her badly over the years and the righteous anger that burns inside her. Lamentably, her external self returns to the passive voice far too frequently and she is unable to assert herself and vocalise that rage and anger. She is fortunate that she has written a comedy show and can explain what she should have said on those occasions, in the presence of a receptive audience. Her health conditions and body hair are the basis of some bizarre and hilarious stories that she impressively links in her performance.

Brodi’s re-telling of her macabre dreams form tense and stirring interludes within her routine. The lighting and her delivery are very dramatic and add another layer of entertainment to the evening.

VILLAIN – ENCORE is at the Factory Theatre until Sunday 5th May and is thoroughly recommended.
